DELL LAPTOP BATTERY PRODUCT RECALL

Dell logoAs reported by the BBC on 15th August 2006, Dell, the world's largest personal computer manufacturer, is recalling 4.1 million notebook computer batteries.

Dell says that it knows of six instances where the batteries, manufactured by Sony, either overheated or worse, caught fire.

The faulty Sony lithium-ion batteries were installed in laptop computers shipped to customers between April 2004 and July 2006. Approximately 3 million of them were sold in the US with
the remaining 1 million sold elsewhere.

Dell laptop models affected include the Latitude, Inspiron, XPS and Precision ranges of notebooks. "In rare cases, a short-circuit could cause the battery to overheat, causing a risk
of smoke and or fire," said Dell spokesman Ira Williams.

Dell have launched a website telling customers how to check their existing batteries and how
to obtain a free replacement at https://www.dellbatteryprogram.com/Default.aspx

Users of affected laptops are advised to remove the battery from the machine and only run the machine using the mains power cable.
