VIRUS INFORMATION
Computer viruses take many forms and can arrive on your computer via an infected e-mail message or simply by accessing the Internet. The term 'virus' is often used to describe both viruses and worms.
A virus needs a host program and will only infect a computer once the program has been run. Viruses can disrupt the operation of the computer system it infects and may damage the information stored there.
A worm is a type of virus that can copy and spread itself without the need for a host program.
Another type of virus in known as a trojan, a computer program that would appear to be legitimate which has been designed to cause your computer problems. Often used in conjunction with viruses, a trojan can allow other computer users to access your machine via the Internet.

VIRUS HOAXES
Do NOT always believe e-mails from friends that warn of
virus attacks that cannot be cleaned, and UNDER
NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you follow the advice
therein without consulting with an IT specialist first.
A lot of these e-mails are hoaxes carrying a warning of a non-existent virus and we would recommend
that you seek professional advice BEFORE taking any suggested action, such as deleting files stored
on your computer's hard drive.

Eset, Symantec, McAfee and GriSoft all produce excellent anti-virus software with differing
prices to suit your budget. For example, a one year subscription
to Eset's NOD32 Anti-virus System is currently priced at
£23 excluding VAT (that's the equivalent of 44p per week
or 6p per day) - a small price to pay when you consider
the cost of having your PC rebuilt due to a virus infection.
If you experience problems installing or using anti-virus software, your computer may already be infected.
SPYWARE & ADAWARE
Spyware is any program that gathers information about a person from a computer without the user's knowledge. Internet advertising, also known as adaware, sometimes tracks a users's personal details passing them on to third parties without their permission.
Spyware doesn't assume control of your computer but it will attempt to do things that you will be unhappy with. Common indications that your computer is 'infected' with spyware include:
- Computer is running unusually slow
- Adverts pop up when your web browser is not running
- Anti-spyware and/or anti-virus software doesn't work as expected
- Increased network traffic results in crippling Internet performance
